The Lillies

“Lillies”

Detail of the wall-painting found at the Prechistoric city of Akrotiri into the house named “Building comlex delta” room D2 , North wall.

The main subject is the composition now known as the “Spring fresco”. Using a range of colours ,including black, red, yellow and blue in various combinations,the artist represented the mountainous and rocky landscape of Santorini, planted with blossoming lillies, between which swallows fly in a diversity of positions.

Dimensions : Height 1,50 m Width 0,80 m

Materials and technique:  The wall-painting is made of handmade lime plaster canvas which is glued on enhanced double seawood. The technique used is the ancient fresco with the original earth colours.The missing pieces of the original are being attributed with the same plaster used for the restoration of the originals.The special finishing applied makes the wall-painting resistant to dust and moisture as well as it ensures longevity without further maintenance,  either when the wall-painting is hanged on the wall or built in the wall.

Sea Daffodils

“Sea Daffodils”  Detail of the wall-painting found at the prehistoric city of Akrotiri into “the house of the Ladies” room 1, west section, South wall.

The lower zone of the wall-painting comprises a broad red-dish-yellow surface with an undulating upper limit,presumably an attempt at rendering uneven ground. The upper zone consists of  a system of narrow black,red and blue bands alternating with white. Between these two zones the main theme is a representation of blossoming plants growing out of the uneven ground. Concerning the species of plant is the “Pancratium lily” .The characteristic trait is that it grows on sandy beaches ,hence its popular name of sea daffodil.It has a pungent heady perfume and abounds even today on the shores of Thera.

''Bare-breasted female figure''

Detail of the wall-painting found at the prehistoric of Akritiri into the “House of the Ladies”,room1, North wall.

The figure is shown bending forward at an angle of 70*, so that her inordinately large breast is exposed and hangs down from the decolletage of her bodice. This Lady's feet  protrude from beneath her Minoan style  skirt. She has rich ,flowing back tresses and a red streak on the cheek. She wears gold ear-ring and a bracelet on her left arm. The bare- breasted  figure is undoubtely shown engaged in some ritual act.

Four male figures were depicted participating in some kind of ritual at the wall-paintings  of this room. The naked boy is with shaven (blue) head and holds a one-handled bowl or fire-box in both hands.
